Quick Answer
This VIC rego calculator adds the 2026–27 registration fee ($352.70 for a car), the TAC charge for your postcode's risk zone ($551, $495 or $429) and 10% insurance duty. A car costs $958.80 a year in metropolitan Melbourne, $897.20 in outer-metro postcodes and $824.60 in rural Victoria.
How VIC Rego Is Calculated in 2026–27
A Victorian rego renewal is three charges on one bill. VicRoads charges a registration fee, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) charge pays for injury cover, and insurance duty of 10% is added to the TAC charge. Only the TAC charge changes with the postcode where you keep the vehicle.
Registration fee = $352.70 a year for a car, people mover or ute; $70.54 for a motorcycle, light trailer or caravan
3 or 6 months = each part pro-rata and rounded to the cent on its own, plus a $2.75 service fee per period

The table shows the full 12-month renewal for each vehicle type in each TAC risk zone, with no concession.
| Vehicle | High risk zone | Medium risk zone | Low risk zone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car, 4WD or SUV | $958.80 | $897.20 | $824.60 |
| People mover (up to 9 seats) | $958.80 | $896.10 | $799.30 |
| Ute, van or light truck (up to 2 t load) | $959.90 | $813.60 | $671.70 |
| Motorcycle up to 60cc | $171.74 | $171.74 | $171.74 |
| Motorcycle 61cc to 125cc | $472.04 | $423.64 | $374.14 |
| Motorcycle 126cc to 500cc or electric | $602.94 | $546.84 | $494.04 |
| Motorcycle over 500cc | $796.54 | $717.34 | $635.94 |
| Light trailer or caravan | $70.54 | $70.54 | $70.54 |
TAC Charge 2026–27 by Vehicle and Risk Zone
The TAC charge for 2026–27 is set by the Transport Accident Charges Order (No.1) 2026, published in the Victoria Government Gazette on 21 April 2026 and in force from 1 July 2026. The charge includes GST, is indexed to CPI every 1 July, and depends on two things: the vehicle’s class and the risk zone of the postcode where it is usually kept. The TAC’s own charge page explains what it pays for.
| Vehicle class (annual TAC charge, incl. GST) | High | Medium | Low |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car, 4WD or SUV — class 1(a) | $551 | $495 | $429 |
| People mover, up to 9 seats — class 1(b)(i) | $551 | $494 | $406 |
| Ute, van or light truck, up to 2 t load — class 2(a) | $552 | $419 | $290 |
| Motorcycle up to 60cc | $92 | $92 | $92 |
| Motorcycle 61cc to 125cc | $365 | $321 | $276 |
| Motorcycle 126cc to 500cc | $484 | $433 | $385 |
| Motorcycle over 500cc | $660 | $588 | $514 |
A 6-month TAC charge is exactly half the annual amount and a 3-month charge exactly a quarter, so a car pays $137.75, $123.75 or $107.25 per quarter. Insurance duty is then 10% of whichever charge applies: $55.10 on a $551 charge.
Which TAC Risk Zone Is Your Postcode In?
The zone comes from the postcode where the vehicle is usually kept, not where you work. Schedule 2 of the Order lists 176 high risk postcodes and 99 medium risk postcodes; every other Victorian postcode is low risk. Neighbouring suburbs can sit in different zones — TAC’s own example is Carrum Downs (3201, high) beside Skye (3977, medium).
| Risk zone | VicRoads description | Example postcodes | Car, 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| High | Metropolitan area | 3000 Melbourne, 3201 Carrum Downs | $958.80 |
| Medium | Outer metropolitan area | 3220 Geelong, 3810 Pakenham, 3977 Skye | $897.20 |
| Low | Rural | 3350 Ballarat, 3550 Bendigo, and every postcode not listed | $824.60 |
3, 6 or 12 Month Rego in Victoria: What Each Period Costs
VicRoads lets you renew for 12, 6 or 3 months. The registration fee and TAC charge are pro-rata, but each shorter period adds a $2.75 service fee, and each part is rounded to the cent separately. Over a year, paying quarterly costs a car $11.04 more than one 12-month renewal, and paying every 6 months costs $5.50 more.
| Car, 4WD or SUV | 12 months | 6 months (a year) | 3 months (a year) |
|---|---|---|---|
| High risk zone | $958.80 | $482.15 ($964.30) | $242.46 ($969.84) |
| Medium risk zone | $897.20 | $451.35 ($902.70) | $227.06 ($908.24) |
| Low risk zone | $824.60 | $415.05 ($830.10) | $208.91 ($835.64) |
Pensioner, Health Care Card and DVA Rego Concessions in Victoria
A concession applies to one personal vehicle used privately — a car, ute, van, heavy vehicle or motorcycle — and VicRoads asks you to apply at least 5 days before the due date. Insurance duty follows the TAC charge, so a 50% TAC discount halves the duty as well, and VicRoads’ renewal calculator adds no $2.75 service fee to a concession renewal.
| Card | Registration fee | TAC charge | Car, high risk zone, 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| No concession | Full | Full | $958.80 |
| Health Care Card | 50% off | Full | $782.45 |
| Pensioner Concession Card, or DVA Gold Card held by a veteran, war widow or war widower | 50% off | 50% off | $479.40 |
| DVA Gold Card marked TPI or EDA | Free | 50% off | $303.05 |
Commonwealth Seniors Health Cards, Seniors Cards and Gold Cards marked DEPENDANT do not qualify. If your Health Care Card comes with an income-tested payment such as JobSeeker, the Centrelink income test calculator shows how much of that payment your earnings leave you. Trade apprentices who use a car, ute or van for their apprenticeship can apply to VicRoads for free registration, which removes the TAC charge as well.
Motorcycle Rego in Victoria and the Safety Levy
Motorcycles pay a $70.54 registration fee, and the TAC charge rises with engine size. From 126cc up, and for every electric motorcycle, the TAC charge includes the Motorcycle Safety Levy — $85.80 a year including GST and duty. The levy is paid once per owner, so each additional motorcycle over 125cc is registered at the lower, levy-exempt rate.
| Motorcycle, 12 months | High | Medium | Low |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 60cc | $171.74 | $171.74 | $171.74 |
| 61cc to 125cc | $472.04 | $423.64 | $374.14 |
| 126cc to 500cc or electric | $602.94 | $546.84 | $494.04 |
| 126cc to 500cc, extra bike (no levy) | $517.14 | $461.04 | $408.24 |
| Over 500cc | $796.54 | $717.34 | $635.94 |
| Over 500cc, extra bike (no levy) | $710.74 | $631.54 | $550.14 |
How to Use the VIC Rego Calculator
-
Type the postcode where the vehicle is kept
Use the postcode of the garage or street where it is parked overnight. The risk zone appears under the box straight away.
-
Pick the vehicle type
Choose car, people mover, ute, a motorcycle engine size, or a light trailer or caravan. For a second motorcycle over 125cc, pick the “Extra motorcycle” option so the safety levy is not counted twice.
-
Choose the registration period
Pick 12, 6 or 3 months. For a shorter period, the tool shows what paying that way costs over a full year.
-
Add a concession if you hold a card
Select Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or DVA Gold Card, or the TPI or EDA option. Leave it on “None” for full fees.
-
Read the breakdown
The result shows the total to pay, then each line behind it: registration fee, TAC charge, insurance duty and any service fee. Share the link to reload the same figures later.
