How it’s worked out
An estimate, not a Centrelink decision. It applies the personal and partner income tests only — Working Credit, Income Bank, the assets test, Rent Assistance and Family Tax Benefit are not included, and they can change your rate. Always report your income to Services Australia.

Quick Answer

Centrelink cuts your payment once your fortnightly income passes the free area: $150 for JobSeeker, Youth Allowance job seekers and partnered Parenting Payment, $232.60 for single Parenting Payment, and $539 for Youth Allowance students and Austudy. Above it you lose 50 cents in the dollar, then 60 cents past the second threshold — so a single JobSeeker on $600 a fortnight keeps $558.10 of the $817.50 maximum rate.

How the Centrelink Income Test Works (July 2026 Rates)

Centrelink does not stop your payment the moment you earn money. Every dollar up to the income free area is ignored; after that your payment tapers away at a set number of cents in the dollar until it reaches nil at the cut-off point. This Centrelink income test calculator applies the free area, the taper and the partner income test to the maximum rate for your situation.

Payment = maximum rate − personal income reduction − partner income reduction
Personal reduction = 50c on each dollar from the free area to the second threshold, then 60c on the rest (or a flat 40c for single principal carers and single Parenting Payment)
Partner reduction = 60c on each dollar of partner income above $1,415 a fortnight
Centrelink income test calculator: income free area, the 50 cent and 60 cent taper bands, and the cut-off point where the payment reaches nil
How the Centrelink income test works: income under the free area is ignored, then the payment tapers at 50c and 60c in the dollar until it hits the cut-off point.

Each payment has its own free area and taper. These are the current rules for the fortnight, taken from the Services Australia payment guide for 1 July to 19 September 2026.

JobSeeker Payment$150 per fortnight50c to $256, then 60c

Income is counted gross, per fortnight — before tax, and from all sources: wages, self-employment profit, net rent and deemed income from investments. Rates change on 20 March and 20 September for JobSeeker and Parenting Payment, and on 1 January for Youth Allowance and Austudy.

Centrelink Income Cut-Off Points: How Much You Can Earn

The cut-off point is the fortnightly income at which your payment reaches nil. Earn under it and you still get a part payment; earn over it in a fortnight and you get nothing for that fortnight, but you stay on the payment record and are paid again in any fortnight you earn less.

Partner Income Test: How Your Partner’s Pay Cuts Your Payment

If you are partnered, a second test runs on top of the personal one. It only bites when your partner is not on a Centrelink payment themselves — if they get an allowance such as JobSeeker or Austudy, their income does not touch your rate.

Your partnerEffect on your payment
Gets an allowance (JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, Austudy, Parenting Payment)Their income does not affect your rate
Gets a pension (Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment)Half the couple’s combined income is run through your personal income test
Gets no payment, aged 22 or over60c off your payment for every dollar they earn over $1,415 a fortnight
Gets no payment, aged under 22, no children60c for every dollar over $1,307 a fortnight
Gets no payment, aged under 22, with children60c for every dollar over $1,402 a fortnight

How to Use the Centrelink Income Test Calculator

  1. Pick your payment

JobSeeker, Youth Allowance for job seekers, Youth Allowance for students and apprentices, Austudy, or Parenting Payment. This sets the free area and the taper.

  2. Pick your situation

Single or partnered, with or without children, at home or away from home. This sets your maximum fortnightly rate and your cut-off point.

  3. Enter your income before tax

Use the picker beside the box if you think in weekly or yearly amounts — the tool converts them to a fortnight for you (weekly × 2, yearly ÷ 26).

  4. Add your partner’s income if you are partnered

The field appears only for partnered rates. Leave it at zero if your partner is on a Centrelink payment of their own.

  5. Read the working

The result shows your payment, how much was taken off in each taper band, and the exact income at which your payment would stop.

This is an estimate, not a Centrelink decision. It runs the personal and partner income tests only — Working Credit, the student Income Bank, the assets test, Rent Assistance and Family Tax Benefit are not included and can all change your rate. Maximum rates used are the published typical total rates, which include the Energy Supplement. Always report your actual income to Services Australia.

Centrelink Income Test Calculator: FAQ

$150 a fortnight before tax on JobSeeker, Youth Allowance for job seekers and partnered Parenting Payment; $232.60 on single Parenting Payment; and $539 on Youth Allowance for students and Austudy. Below those amounts your payment is untouched.

50 cents for each dollar between $150 and $256 a fortnight, then 60 cents for each dollar above $256. Single principal carers lose a flat 40 cents for each dollar over $150 instead.

$1,530.17 a fortnight for a single person with no children, $1,626.84 with dependent children and $1,414.67 if you are partnered. A single principal carer can earn up to $2,356.25 because of the gentler 40 cent taper.

Only if they are not on a payment themselves. Then you lose 60 cents for every dollar they earn over $1,415 a fortnight (partner aged 22 or over). If your partner receives an allowance such as JobSeeker, their income does not reduce your rate.

Youth Allowance students, Australian Apprentices and Austudy recipients get a $539 fortnightly free area instead of $150, and they can bank unused free area in the Income Bank — up to $13,500 for students — to cover a big pay fortnight later.

Before tax. Centrelink assesses gross income for the fortnight you earn it, including wages, self-employment profit, net rent and deemed income from financial investments — not the amount that lands in your bank account. What income tax then takes out of that gross figure is a separate calculation — see the Australian income tax calculator.
