Quick Answer
Queensland charges rego on the number of engine cylinders, not weight or value: $385.45 a year for a 4-cylinder car, $610.30 for a 5 or 6-cylinder and $854.70 for a 7 or 8-cylinder, plus the $67.25 traffic improvement fee and CTP insurance of $411.80 to $424.80. That makes a 12-month 4-cylinder rego $864.50 to $877.50 in total.
How QLD Rego Cost Is Calculated (2026 Fees)
Queensland is the only state that prices registration on your engine cylinders. Weight, value and postcode make no difference — a 4-cylinder hatchback and a 4-cylinder ute pay exactly the same registration fee. That makes Queensland the outlier: NSW charges vehicle tax in tare-weight bands and WA charges per 100 kg of tare. This rego cost calculator QLD adds the three parts of a Queensland renewal: registration, the traffic improvement fee, and CTP insurance.
CTP is a range because your licensed insurer sets the premium inside the band

| Vehicle | Registration (12 months) | Traffic improvement fee | CTP insurance | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1, 2 or 3 cylinders, electric or steam | $303.10 | $67.25 | $411.80–$424.80 | $782.15–$795.15 |
| 4 cylinders | $385.45 | $67.25 | $411.80–$424.80 | $864.50–$877.50 |
| 5 or 6 cylinders | $610.30 | $67.25 | $411.80–$424.80 | $1,089.35–$1,102.35 |
| 7 or 8 cylinders | $854.70 | $67.25 | $411.80–$424.80 | $1,333.75–$1,346.75 |
| 9 to 12 cylinders | $1,002.35 | $67.25 | $411.80–$424.80 | $1,481.40–$1,494.40 |
| Motorcycle | $145.60 | $73.00 | $442.60 | $661.20 |
Why Cylinders Decide Your Queensland Rego
Moving from four cylinders to six adds $224.85 a year in Queensland, for the same weight, the same value and the same suburb. It is the single biggest lever on your rego bill, and it catches people out because badges lie: plenty of cars sold as “6 cylinder equivalent” are turbocharged fours, and many modern V6 replacements are actually four-cylinder engines.
| Step up | Extra registration per year | Over 5 years |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 cylinders or EV → 4 cylinders | $82.35 | $411.75 |
| 4 cylinders → 5 or 6 cylinders | $224.85 | $1,124.25 |
| 5 or 6 → 7 or 8 cylinders | $244.40 | $1,222.00 |
| 7 or 8 → 9 to 12 cylinders | $147.65 | $738.25 |
Check the engine, not the badge, before you buy — the difference between a four and a six over five years of ownership pays for a set of tyres.
Queensland Rego Concessions for Pensioners and Seniors
Concessions cut the registration fee only. The traffic improvement fee and CTP insurance are never discounted, which is why a concession rego still costs over $580 a year.
| Concession | 4-cylinder registration | Total for 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| None — full rate | $385.45 | $864.50–$877.50 |
| Concession or seniors card issued from 1 July 1994 | $192.75 | $671.80–$684.80 |
| Concession card issued before 1 July 1994 (vehicles up to 4 t) | $108.60 | $587.65–$600.65 |
How to Use the QLD Rego Cost Calculator
-
Pick your cylinder count
One to three cylinders (including electric and steam), four, five or six, seven or eight, nine to twelve, or motorcycle. Check the engine specification, not the model name.
-
Choose your registration period
12 or 6 months. Six-month registration is charged pro-rata, plus a surcharge that Transport and Main Roads sets for the extra renewal notice.
-
Add a concession if you hold one
Pick the card you hold. The field disappears for motorcycles, because TMR does not publish a concession motorcycle rate in the fee table.
-
Read the range
The answer is a range because CTP is a range. The breakdown shows registration, the traffic improvement fee and CTP separately, plus the cost per year.
