Quick Answer

NSW rego is an $84 registration fee plus a vehicle tax banded on tare weight — $391 a year for a private car of 1,151–1,500 kg, or $615 if it is registered for business. Add your Green Slip (CTP), which insurers price separately, and a typical 1,400 kg private car costs about $1,075 a year with a $600 Green Slip.

How NSW Rego Cost Is Calculated (2026 Fees)

New South Wales splits rego into three parts, and only two of them are set by the government. Transport for NSW charges a flat registration fee plus a vehicle tax that steps up in bands as tare weight rises; your Green Slip is priced by an insurer. This rego cost calculator NSW adds all three so you see the real renewal figure, not just the government slice.

NSW rego = $84 registration fee + vehicle tax (tare weight band, private or business) + your Green Slip (CTP)
Caravans: privately registered towed caravans and camper trailers from 255 kg to 4.5 t get 40% off the vehicle tax

The three parts of a NSW rego bill: the flat registration fee, the tare-weight vehicle tax band, and the insurer-priced Green Slip.

Unlike Western Australia, which charges a smooth rate per 100 kg, NSW uses steps. One kilogram over a band edge moves you to the next rate, so a 1,500 kg car pays $391 and a 1,501 kg car pays $596 — a $205 jump for one kilo.

NSW Vehicle Tax by Tare Weight (Private vs Business)

Vehicle tax is the biggest government component and it doubles up if the vehicle is registered for business use. These are the current rates for cars, station wagons, utes and light trucks.

Tare weightPrivate useBusiness use
Up to 970 kg$278$449
971–1,150 kg$322$510
1,151–1,500 kg$391$615
1,501–2,500 kg$596$924
2,501–2,790 kg$860$1,434
2,791–3,050 kg$977$1,629
3,051–3,300 kg$1,070$1,784
3,301–3,560 kg$1,164$1,941
3,561–3,810 kg$1,249$2,083 + $343
3,811–4,060 kg$1,343$2,239 + $343
4,061–4,320 kg$1,434$2,390 + $343
4,321–4,500 kg$1,525$2,542 + $343

Motorcycles pay a flat $87 vehicle tax for both private and business use. Trailers, caravans and motorhomes use their own scale, starting at $0 up to 254 kg and $156 for 255–764 kg.

Business cars over 3,565 kg pay an extra $343 of vehicle tax on top of the band rate. Motorhomes and campervans are charged on the trailer and caravan scale but are not eligible for the 40% private caravan reduction.

Green Slip (CTP): The Part NSW Does Not Set

Compulsory third party insurance covers injury you cause to other people, and it is compulsory before you can register. Transport for NSW does not price it — six licensed insurers do, and they can quote very different amounts for the same car. That is why this calculator asks you to enter your quote instead of guessing.

How to Use the NSW Rego Cost Calculator

  1. Pick your vehicle type

Car or light truck, motorcycle, caravan, box trailer, or motorhome. This chooses the right tax scale — and whether the 40% caravan reduction applies.

  2. Enter the tare weight

Tare is the unladen weight, shown on your registration papers. Use the picker beside the box to switch between kilograms and tonnes. The field disappears for motorcycles, which pay a flat tax.

  3. Choose private or business use

Business registration costs more — on a 1,400 kg car it is $615 instead of $391.

  4. Add your Green Slip quote

Get quotes from SIRA’s Green Slip comparison tool and type the price in. Leave it at zero and the tool shows government fees only, and says so.

  5. Read the breakdown

You get the total plus every line behind it, your weight band, and how much a single kilo over the band edge would cost you.

A renewal estimate only. Cars five years and older need an eSafety check first, capped at $52 for a light vehicle, $29 for a motorcycle and $27–$41 for a trailer. New registrations add $58 for plates, and buying a vehicle adds stamp duty plus a transfer fee of $42 within 14 days or $193 after. Vehicles over 4.5 t are charged under national heavy vehicle rates.

NSW Rego Cost Calculator: FAQ

About $1,000 to $1,400 a year for a typical private car once the Green Slip is included. The government part is $84 plus vehicle tax — $391 for a 1,151–1,500 kg car — and the Green Slip usually adds $500 to $700 on top.

By tare (unladen) weight, in steps rather than per kilo. A private car up to 970 kg pays $278, 971–1,150 kg pays $322, and 1,151–1,500 kg pays $391. Business-registered vehicles pay a higher rate in every band.

Usually one of three things: your car sits in a heavier tax band, it is registered for business use, or your Green Slip is dearer. Only the Green Slip can be changed — insurers price the same car differently, so compare before you renew.

Yes. Privately registered towed caravans and purpose-built camper trailers from 255 kg to 4.5 tonnes get 40% off the vehicle tax automatically — a 1,600 kg caravan pays $330 instead of $550. Motorhomes and campervans do not qualify.

The eSafety check is capped at $52 for a light vehicle, $29 for a motorcycle, $27 for a trailer without brakes and $41 with brakes. It is required each year once the vehicle is five years old. A blue slip (safety and identity check) is $82 for a light vehicle.

It depends on the car, because each state charges on something different — NSW on tare weight bands, WA per 100 kg of tare, and Queensland on the number of engine cylinders. A light four-cylinder car often does best in Queensland, while a heavy car is usually cheapest in NSW private registration.
