Quick Answer

Copart UK adds a tiered Fee B buyer premium, an internet bid fee and a £50 lot-retrieval fee to your hammer price, and 20% VAT is charged on all three. On a £2,000 VAT Margin win the fees come to about £575 including VAT, for an all-in cost near £2,575 — but a VAT Qualifying lot adds another 20% VAT on the £2,000 bid (£400), pushing it to about £2,975.

Copart UK fees breakdown showing hammer price plus Fee B, internet bid fee and lot retrieval with 20% VAT adding up to the total cost in pounds
A Copart UK win adds a tiered Fee B, an internet bid fee and a £50 lot-retrieval fee on top of your bid — all plus 20% VAT — and a VAT Qualifying lot also adds VAT to the hammer price.

How Copart UK Fees Are Calculated

Copart UK prices work differently from the US. The fees are in pounds, 20% VAT is added to every fee, and whether the vehicle itself carries VAT depends on the lot type:

Total = Hammer price + Vehicle VAT + (Fee B + Internet bid fee + Lot retrieval) × 1.20
The Fee B buyer premium is tiered by the hammer price; the internet bid fee is tiered by the bid and higher for a Live bid; the lot retrieval is £50 (£60 inc VAT). Vehicle VAT is 0 on a VAT Margin lot and 20% of the hammer price on a VAT Qualifying lot.

This calculator models the Fee B public buyer (under 12 cars a year). Fee B runs as flat brackets that rise with the hammer price, then becomes 6.5% of the bid at £10,000 and above. Here is the full published schedule, net and inclusive of 20% VAT:

The VAT Margin vs VAT Qualifying label on the lot is the biggest hidden cost for a private buyer. A Margin lot adds no VAT to the bid; a Qualifying lot adds 20% — on a £5,000 car that is an extra £1,000. Always check the lot details. Fees vary by membership tier, location and date, so treat the result as an estimate and confirm on Copart UK’s official member-fees page.

Other Copart UK Fees: Late Payment, Relist & Storage

The fees above are what you pay on a normal, prompt purchase. Miss a deadline and these kick in — the relist fee in particular dwarfs everything else:

FeeTypical amountWhen it applies
Lot retrieval£50 + VAT (£60)Every sale — mandatory vehicle movement
Late payment fee£50If unpaid within 3 business days of the invoice
Storage feeCharged for weekends / bank holidaysAfter the first few days, until collection
Relist fee10% of bid (min ≈£300)If unpaid by around day 6–8 — the lot is relisted

Don’t pay on time and the relist fee is 10% of your bid (minimum about £300) — often more than Fee B itself. Pay within 3 business days and collect promptly to avoid late, storage and relist charges entirely.

How to Use the Copart UK Fee Calculator

  1. Enter the hammer price

Type the bid you expect to win the vehicle for, in pounds. Every fee is worked out from this figure.

  2. Set the bid type and VAT status

Choose Live bid or Pre-Bid (Live costs a little more in internet bid fee), then pick VAT Margin or VAT Qualifying from the lot details — this decides whether 20% VAT is added to the bid itself.

  3. Read the breakdown

The result panel lists the hammer price, any vehicle VAT, Fee B, the internet bid fee and the £60 lot retrieval — all including VAT — and the all-in total. It also shows the total VAT you pay and the fees as a percentage of your bid.

£2,000Live · Qualifying£574.80£2,974.80
£5,000Live · Margin£844.80£5,844.80

The two £2,000 rows are the same vehicle and fees — the only difference is the VAT status. The Qualifying lot adds 20% VAT (£400) to the hammer price, which is why checking that label matters so much.

How to Reduce Copart UK Fees

  1. Check the VAT status before you bid

A VAT Qualifying lot adds 20% to the hammer price that a private buyer cannot reclaim. On a £5,000 car that is £1,000 — favour VAT Margin lots unless you are VAT-registered.

  2. Pay and collect promptly

Pay within 3 business days to skip the £50 late fee, collect before storage charges build up, and never let a lot reach the relist stage (10% of the bid, minimum about £300).

  3. Use a Pre-Bid where you can

A Preliminary bid’s internet fee is about £10 lower than a Live bid across most brackets — small, but it adds up across several cars.

  4. Budget with VAT and fees, not just the bid

Run the number through this calculator first and set a maximum bid that keeps the all-in (inc-VAT) total inside your budget.

  5. Buy enough to reach Fee A

Buyers taking 12+ vehicles a year move to the cheaper Fee A schedule. If you flip regularly, the volume can pay for itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

On a £2,000 VAT Margin win the fees are about £575 including VAT — Fee B (£408), the internet bid fee (about £107 Live) and the £60 lot retrieval — for an all-in cost near £2,575. A VAT Qualifying lot adds another 20% VAT on the bid, so the same car would be about £2,975.

Fee B is Copart UK’s buyer premium for standard buyers (those buying fewer than 12 vehicles a year). It is a tiered charge that rises with the hammer price — for example £85 + VAT on a £150 bid or £340 + VAT on a £2,000 bid — and becomes 6.5% of the bid at £10,000 and above. Higher-volume buyers are on the cheaper Fee A schedule.

On a VAT Margin lot, no VAT is added to the hammer price — best for private buyers. On a VAT Qualifying lot, 20% VAT is added to the hammer price; a VAT-registered buyer can usually reclaim it, but a private buyer cannot, so it is a real extra cost. The label is shown in the lot details, and this calculator lets you switch between the two.

Yes. You always pay 20% VAT on Fee B, the internet bid fee and the £50 lot-retrieval fee, whatever the lot’s VAT status. That is why the £50 retrieval fee appears as £60 and Fee B figures are shown inclusive of VAT in the breakdown.

If you do not pay within 3 business days of the invoice you are charged a £50 late fee, storage can be charged over weekends and bank holidays, and an unpaid lot is relisted with a fee of 10% of the hammer price (minimum about £300). The relist fee is often larger than Fee B, so always pay and collect promptly.

Favour VAT Margin lots (a Qualifying lot adds 20% to the bid you cannot reclaim as a private buyer), pay within 3 business days to avoid the £50 late fee and the 10%/£300 relist fee, use a Pre-Bid to shave the internet fee, and budget with the inc-VAT total rather than the bid. Regular buyers (12+ cars a year) move to the cheaper Fee A schedule.

No. Copart US charges in dollars with a buyer fee, virtual bid fee, gate fee, environmental fee and state sales tax. Copart UK charges in pounds with Fee B, an internet bid fee and a lot-retrieval fee, all plus 20% VAT, and the vehicle may carry VAT depending on whether it is a Margin or Qualifying lot.
