Audiobook Speed Formula: New Listening Time = Length ÷ Speed
Speeding up narration doesn’t skip anything — the same audio just plays in less wall-clock time. So the audiobook time calculator math is one division, and the time you save is whatever is left over:
Time saved = Book length − New listening time
Narration pace = 155 wpm × Playback speed
Example: 10 h 30 min ÷ 1.5 = 7 h 0 min, saving 3 h 30 min at a pace of 233 wpm. The percentage saved is (1 − 1÷speed) × 100 — a fixed 33.3% at 1.5× and 50% at 2×, whatever the book’s length.
Because the fraction saved depends only on the speed, you can plan whole libraries with one rule: 1.25× trims a fifth, 1.5× trims a third, 2× cuts the book in half, and 3× leaves a third of the runtime. The third line matters as much as the first two, and it is the line most speed calculators leave out: a multiplier is only meaningful once you know what pace it produces.

Audiobook Words Per Minute at Every Playback Speed
A commercial audiobook is narrated at about 155 words per minute. That figure is not a survey result — it is a production standard: ACX, Audible’s production arm, plans titles at roughly 9,300 words per finished hour, and 9,300 ÷ 60 is exactly 155. Playback speed multiplies it, which is what the Pace column in the calculator shows:

Both columns come from the exact figure of 155 wpm × speed; the words-per-minute column is rounded to whole words, so 1.25× shows 194 wpm while its words-per-hour stays at the unrounded 11,625.
Narrators vary, so treat 155 wpm as the planning figure rather than a measurement of your particular book. A brisk narrator recorded at 170 wpm reaches any given pace at a lower multiplier than a deliberate one recorded at 140 wpm — which is precisely why the ceiling below is expressed as a rate and not as a speed setting.
Best Speed to Listen to Audiobooks: Where the Evidence Actually Stops
Almost every guide repeats the same advice: 2× is fine, beyond that comprehension falls. The advice traces back to a real study, but the number was copied across without its unit. The finding is about a rate, not a multiplier — and once you restore the unit, the answer for audiobooks changes.
A University of California, Los Angeles team — Murphy, Hoover, Agadzhanyan, Kuehn and Castel — published Learning in double time: The effect of lecture video speed on immediate and delayed comprehension in Applied Cognitive Psychology in 2022. In its first experiment, 231 participants watched lecture videos at 1×, 1.5×, 2× or 2.5× and were tested immediately and again a week later. The abstract’s own summary: minimal costs from 1× up to 2×, and performance declining beyond 2×.
UCLA’s own write-up of the study reports the same conclusion.
The part that never gets copied is the mechanism. The paper states that speech comprehension begins to decline at around 275 words per minute — a threshold from Foulke and Sticht (1969) — and notes that its own videos exceeded that threshold when played at 2×. So “2×” was never the finding. 275 wpm was the finding. 2× was simply where those particular videos crossed it.
How fast were they? The paper publishes both the spoken word count and the running time of each video, so the pace can be recovered rather than taken on trust:

That gives a defensible ceiling rather than a folk rule. On a normally narrated book, 1.75× is the last preset that keeps you inside the evidence; 2× and above are outside it. This is not a claim that 2× is unusable — the same paper notes that listeners can be trained to follow speech at far higher rates, and that 85% of the students surveyed already watched above normal speed. It is a claim about where the published support ends, which is a different and more honest thing to tell you.
Audible’s apps let you set narration speed anywhere from 0.5× to 3.5× and remember the setting per title, so a dense non-fiction book can stay at 1.25× while a re-read thriller runs at 2×. Dialogue-heavy fiction and narrators you already know tolerate higher speeds than technical material you are hearing for the first time.
Is 1× Slower Than Reading? The Break-Even Speed
There is a second number worth knowing, and it points the opposite way from the ceiling. Most listeners assume 1× is the “natural” pace and that any speed-up is borrowed time. For text, it is the reverse: 1× narration is slower than simply reading the book yourself.
The reference figure comes from a meta-analysis of 190 studies covering 18,573 participants, published by Marc Brysbaert in the Journal of Memory and Language in 2019: average adult silent reading of English non-fiction runs at 238 words per minute, and fiction at 260 wpm. Reading aloud averages 183 wpm — itself faster than the 155 wpm audiobook standard, because narration deliberately adds pacing, character voices and dramatic beats. The full paper is in

Pick a page of ordinary prose from the same book, or one like it, and read it silently at your normal pace with a stopwatch running.

Turn it into words per minute
Count the words on the page — or estimate at about 300 for a typical paperback page — and divide by the minutes you took. Reading a 300-word page in 75 seconds is 300 ÷ 1.25 = 240 wpm.

That is your personal break-even multiplier. 240 wpm ÷ 155 = 1.55×. Anything slower than that and reading the book yourself would be quicker; anything faster and the audiobook is winning.
Put the two numbers together and the useful answer is a window, not a single setting. Between about 1.54× and 1.77× you are reading-speed or faster and still inside the comprehension evidence. That window is narrow, it sits almost exactly where the popular 1.5× and 1.75× presets already are, and it explains why those two presets feel right to so many listeners while 1.25× feels pointless and 2.5× feels like skimming. Each row is the same division the tool runs. Take the first: 10 h 30 min is 630 minutes; 630 ÷ 1.5 = 420 minutes = 7 hours, so you save 630 − 420 = 210 minutes (3 h 30 min) — and at 60 minutes of listening a day, the book is done in 7 days instead of 11. The columns stop at 1.75× deliberately — that is the fastest preset still inside the comprehension evidence, so it is the honest ceiling for a “books per year” claim. A 30-minute daily commute at 1.5× finishes 27 ten-hour books instead of 18, with zero extra listening time; stepping to 1.75× adds four more.
