Audiobook Percentage Formula: Position ÷ Length × 100

Three numbers come out of one position, and only the first is a percentage. Keeping them apart is the whole job of this audiobook percentage calculator:

Percent complete = Time listened ÷ Book length × 100
Content left = Book length − Time listened
Listening left = Content left ÷ Playback speed
Example: 3 h 30 min of a 14 h book is 25%, with 10 h 30 min of content left, which is 7 h of listening at 1.5×.

Every audiobook runtime is quoted at 1×, so the book length you type is the published runtime whatever speed you actually play it at. Type the runtime, not your adjusted estimate — the calculator does the adjusting.

Why Your Percentage Doesn’t Move When You Speed Up

This is the part that trips people up, and it is the reason most progress tools give a misleading answer. A percentage measures the book. A duration measures your afternoon. They are not the same quantity, and they only agree at 1×.

Speeding up the narration does not move you through the story. You have not heard any more words than you had a second ago, so the fraction of the book behind you is unchanged. What changes is how long the rest will take — and that is a wall-clock number, not a percentage.

Read down the columns: two of them never move and one halves. A 14-hour book with 3 h 30 min listened is 25% done at every speed in that table. The only column that responds to the speed setting is the last one.

The practical consequence. If you are planning around a deadline — a book club, a library loan, a flight — the number you need is listening left, not the percentage. If you are comparing where you are with a friend reading the print edition, the number you need is the percentage. Asking a progress bar for the wrong one is how people end up surprised on the last day of a loan.

How to Use the Audiobook Progress Calculator

  1. Enter the book’s total length

    Use the runtime printed on the book page — Audible, Libby, Spotify and Apple Books all show it, e.g. “14 hrs and 0 mins”. It is always the 1× runtime.

  2. Enter where you are, either way round

    Tap Time listened and type hours and minutes, or tap Percent done and type the figure your app already shows. The calculator derives whichever one you did not enter.

  3. Pick your playback speed

    This changes the listening left figure and the comparison strip. It deliberately does not change your percentage — that is a property of the book, not of your player.

  4. Read the two “left” figures separately

    Content left is how much book remains. Listening left is how much of your day it will cost at the speed you chose. Use the second one for deadlines.

Audiobook Hours to Printed Pages: Convert Through Words, Not Hours

“How many pages is this audiobook?” gets answered badly almost everywhere, because most answers use a pages-per-hour rate. That rate cannot be stable: a page is a unit of paper, not a unit of content. Change the trim size, the font or the leading and the page count moves while the book stays identical.

What does not move is the word count. So the honest conversion goes through words in two steps:

  1. Hours to words

    Audiobooks are produced to a planning standard of about 9,300 words per finished hour — the ACX figure, which is simply 155 words per minute × 60. A 10 h 30 min remainder is 10.5 × 9,300 = 97,650 words.

  2. Words to pages

    Divide by the words on a printed page. A survey of 900+ authors by Kindlepreneur puts that at 233 words per page for non-fiction and 280 for fiction. So 97,650 words is roughly 349 pages of a novel or 419 pages of non-fiction.

Look at the spread before you trust any single page number. The same audiobook hour is 23 pages at one end of that table and 93 at the other — a factor of four. The survey’s own responses ranged from 100 to 400 words per page. That is why this calculator prints a range for pages instead of one confident figure: a single number there would be precision the underlying data does not support. The full survey is on

Take the first row step by step. 3 h 30 min is 210 minutes and 14 h is 840, so 210 ÷ 840 = 25%. The content left is 840 − 210 = 630 minutes, or 10 h 30 min. At 1.5× that becomes 630 ÷ 1.5 = 420 minutes — 7 hours of listening. And 630 minutes is 10.5 audiobook hours, or 97,650 words, which lands between 349 and 419 printed pages depending on how the book is set.

Why Chapter Number Is a Poor Guide to Your Percentage

A common shortcut is to read progress off the chapter list: chapter 12 of 30 must be 40%. It is a reasonable instinct and it is usually wrong, because chapters are not equal lengths. Publishers break a book where the story breaks, not on a timer.

The distortion runs in a predictable direction. Opening chapters tend to be shorter while the book establishes itself; middle chapters run longest; and the final “chapter” in an audiobook file list is frequently not a chapter at all but the closing credits, an author’s note or an excerpt from the next book. A 30-item chapter list can easily contain two or three items that are not story, which pushes every chapter-based estimate too low.

Use the clock, not the chapter count. Every player shows elapsed time somewhere, even when it leads with a chapter number, and elapsed time is exact where chapter position is an assumption. If you only have the chapter number, treat the resulting percentage as a rough floor rather than an answer.

Finishing Before a Deadline: Daily Listening Needed

Library loans, book clubs and long flights all pose the same question, and it is the one the percentage cannot answer on its own. Convert the content still ahead of you into real listening hours first, then divide by the days you have. The table below assumes 1.5× playback:

Read the third row against a typical routine. Ten and a half hours of content left sounds like a lost cause with a week to go, but at 1.5× it is seven hours of listening — exactly one hour a day, which is a normal commute. The same remainder at 1× would demand an hour and a half a day, and at 2× it drops to about forty-five minutes. That is the practical value of separating the two “left” figures: one of them tells you whether the deadline is realistic and the other one cannot.

Percent or Time? What Each App Actually Shows You

Part of the confusion is that the major apps do not agree on which number to display, which is why this calculator accepts either one as input.

A note on apps that show “time remaining” at your current speed. Some players quietly adjust the remaining-time readout for your playback speed and some do not, and none of them label which they are doing. If your app’s figure disagrees with the listening left here, that is almost always the reason: one of you is quoting content, the other wall clock.

There are two answers and they differ. Content left is the runtime minus what you have heard. Listening left is that figure divided by your playback speed — the one to use for a deadline like a library loan. At 1× they are the same number; at any other speed they are not.

Roughly 33 to 40 pages, but the honest answer is a range. One finished audiobook hour is about 9,300 words (the ACX production standard), and a printed page holds about 233 words in non-fiction or 280 in fiction. That gives 40 and 33 pages respectively — and at the extremes of the surveyed range, 100 to 400 words per page, the same hour is anywhere from 23 to 93 pages.

Because some players adjust that readout for your playback speed and some quote the raw content remaining, and none of them say which. Compare your app’s figure against both numbers here — it will match one of them, and that tells you which convention your player uses.

Multiply the runtime by the percentage and divide by 100. 33% of a 12-hour book is 720 × 33 ÷ 100 = 238 minutes, or 3 h 58 min. Switch the calculator to Percent done and it does this for you, then reports the time and pages still ahead.

Not exactly. An audiobook percentage is a fraction of the runtime, while an ebook percentage is a fraction of the file’s content, which usually includes front matter, notes and an index. The same point in the same book can therefore read differently in the two formats, and the audiobook figure is generally the cleaner measure of story progress.

Work backwards from listening left rather than from the percentage. Take the content still ahead of you, divide by your playback speed to get real hours, then divide by the days remaining. If that daily figure is more listening than you realistically do, either raise the speed or renew — the percentage alone will not tell you.
