How the Heating Oil Usage Calculator Works

This heating oil usage calculator has two modes. Yearly usage & cost estimates how much kerosene your home burns in a year and what it costs; How long will it last? tracks the oil left in your tank and predicts the run-out date. Both use published UK figures — the Energy Saving Trust puts a typical 3-bed home at 1,500–2,000 litres a year, and a litre of kerosene holds about 10.35 kWh of energy.

How Long Will 1,000 Litres of Heating Oil Last?

It depends entirely on the weather and how hard the boiler is working. Using the calculator’s seasonal daily-use figures, a fresh 1,000-litre delivery lasts:

That is why heating oil suppliers say a 1,000-litre order should comfortably clear eight weeks of winter — if yours is emptying faster, the boiler, controls or insulation are worth a look.

Heating Oil Usage Calculator: FAQ

A typical 3-bedroom home on oil central heating uses about 1,500–2,000 litres a year, per Energy Saving Trust figures. A small or well-insulated home may use closer to 1,100 litres, while a large or poorly insulated one can burn 2,500–3,400 litres or more.

Roughly 8 weeks in deep winter (about 18 litres a day), around 16 weeks in spring or autumn (9 litres a day), and most of a summer if only hot water is used (about 4 litres a day). Enter your own daily use in tank mode to get an exact run-out date.

A running oil boiler burns roughly 15–25 litres a day in cold weather and about 4–5 litres a day in summer for hot water only. The calculator uses 18, 9 and 4 litres a day as winter, shoulder-season and summer defaults, which you can adjust.

Tanks only fill to about 95% of their rated size, so a 1,200-litre tank takes roughly 1,140 litres — about £798 from empty at 70p per litre. The calculator’s “cost to fill up” works out the litres needed from your current level and multiplies by your price.

Order before you drop to about a quarter of a tank. Suppliers often need several days’ notice, prices and delivery slots move around, and running a tank dry can draw sludge and air into the boiler, which may need an engineer to restart.

Kerosene (28-second heating oil) holds about 10.35 kWh of usable energy per litre. At 70p per litre that is roughly 6.8p per kWh, before boiler losses — the calculator shows the kWh and pence-per-kWh so you can compare oil with gas or electricity.
