Quick Answer

An EMI calculator computes your Equated Monthly Installment using EMI = P × r × (1+r)ⁿ / ((1+r)ⁿ − 1), where P is the principal, r is the monthly interest rate and n is the number of months. It also shows total interest paid, a principal-vs-interest breakdown, and a full year-by-year amortization schedule.

How the EMI calculator splits every payment into principal and interest — early months are interest-heavy, later months pay down the balance faster.

The EMI Formula

This EMI calculator uses the standard reducing-balance formula adopted by banks worldwide. It also supports a flat-interest mode (total interest as a lump sum) and back-solves the implied APR so you can compare flat vs reducing rates apples-to-apples.

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n − 1)
where P = principal, r = annual rate / 12 / 100, n = total months. If the rate is 0 %, EMI = P / n.

How to Use the EMI Calculator

  1. Enter loan amount and pick currency

Type the total loan principal and choose your currency (PKR, USD, GBP, EUR, INR, etc.) from the dropdown.

  2. Enter loan term and interest rate

Type the repayment period in years, months or both. Then type the annual interest rate (%). Tap the toggle next to the rate field to switch to flat total interest mode if your lender quotes a flat amount instead of a rate.

  3. Read the results

The results card shows your monthly EMI, total amount payable, total interest, a principal-vs-interest donut chart, and a collapsible year-by-year amortization schedule. Open Add extra monthly payment to see how prepayments shorten your tenure and reduce total interest.

Education loan$ 40,0005.5 %10 yrs$ 434$ 12,046

All examples use reducing-balance (standard) EMI. Flat-interest mode will show a higher total cost for the same quoted rate — use the implied APR line to compare fairly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Flat interest charges interest on the original principal for the entire term, so you pay more overall. Reducing-balance (the default EMI formula) charges interest only on the remaining balance each month — the implied APR shown by the calculator lets you compare both methods side by side.

Yes — open the “Add extra monthly payment” section and enter a fixed monthly prepayment. The calculator shows how much interest you save, how many months the tenure shortens, and the amortization schedule reflects the faster payoff.

Yes — the EMI formula is the same for any reducing-balance loan. Just enter the relevant principal, term and rate. The calculator is currency-agnostic and works for car loans, personal loans, education loans or any installment-based repayment.

Click “View yearly schedule” below the donut chart. Each row shows the year, principal paid that year, interest paid, total paid and remaining balance. In early years most of the EMI goes to interest; in later years most goes to principal — the schedule makes this shift visible.
