Does a Sauna Burn Calories? The Honest Number
Yes, but less than most people expect, and the gap between the two figures on your screen is the whole story. A 70 kg person sitting in a traditional sauna for 30 minutes burns 62.5 kcal.
That total already includes the calories you would have burned anyway. At complete rest — 1.0 MET, which is the definition of the unit — the same person over the same 30 minutes burns 36.75 kcal. So the sauna itself is responsible for only 25.7 kcal. The rest of the number is simply being alive for half an hour.
This matters because the claim runs the other way in marketing. The 2018 systematic review Clinical Effects of Regular Dry Sauna Bathing notes that facilities offering sauna bathing often advertise “detoxification, increased metabolism, weight loss” among their benefits. The MET arithmetic does not support the weight-loss half of that list, and the next section shows why the bathroom scale appears to disagree.
Sauna Weight Loss: Why 97.7% of the Drop Is Water

The water-to-fat ratio never drops below about 26 to 1, even in hot yoga. Any protocol that reports sauna weight loss by weighing you before and after is measuring hydration, not body composition. Switch the unit pill to kg or lb. Calorie burn scales directly with weight, so this is the input that moves the result most.
- Enter the session length in minutes.
A typical session is 15–30 minutes. The tool warns above 30 minutes and again above 60, because the formula keeps extrapolating in a straight line and human heat tolerance does not.
Infrared vs Traditional vs Steam Room vs Hot Yoga
The four options are not variations on one thing. Traditional Finnish saunas run at 80–100 °C with dry air, while infrared cabins use emitters and run considerably cooler; the systematic review above describes both patterns. A steam room is wetter and lower-temperature, and the review notes that high humidity causes water to condense on the skin and reduces sweat evaporation.
Infrared burns the least of the four. At 1.5 METs it produces 55.1 kcal in 30 minutes for a 70 kg person against 62.5 kcal for traditional dry heat — 11.8% less, despite being the option most often marketed for weight loss.
Traditional dry sauna — 1.7 METs, 0.7 L/hr. The reference case, and the one the research literature covers most thoroughly. It produces the second-highest sweat rate of the four while sitting near the bottom for calorie burn, which is precisely why the scale and the calorie readout disagree so sharply.
Infrared — 1.5 METs, 0.5 L/hr. The lowest on both counts. The systematic review cautions that steam is not simply a wetter sauna: high humidity causes water to condense on the skin and cuts sweat evaporation, so the physiological response may differ from dry heat even where the numbers look similar.
Hot yoga — 4.0 METs, 1.0 L/hr — and comparing gross totals hides how far ahead it is. Its 147 kcal is 2.35 times the traditional sauna’s 62.5 kcal. But strip out the 36.75 kcal both would have burned at rest and hot yoga contributes 110.3 kcal against 25.7 kcal — 4.29 times as much. That is because hot yoga is exercise that happens to be hot, whereas a sauna is heat that you sit in.

Sweat loss does not scale with weight in this model — it is a per-type rate in litres per hour, so every user of the same sauna type loses the same estimated volume for the same duration. That is a simplification, and it is named in the limits section below.

Sweat is roughly 99% water, so the gram figure on your results panel doubles as a millilitre figure. That makes the fluid column the most directly actionable number the calculator produces — more so than the calories, which are too small to plan around.

A 45-minute hot yoga class at 750 g is losing about three quarters of a litre — roughly a large water bottle. Note that these are per-type rates rather than per-person: the model does not scale sweat with body weight, so the same row applies whatever you weigh. Treat it as an order-of-magnitude guide to what to drink back, not a personal measurement.
Worked Example: A 20-Minute Infrared Session

Sweat over the same 20 minutes is 0.5 × (20 ÷ 60) = 0.17 L, about 167 g, against roughly 5.5 g of fat. The scale will move about thirty times more than your body composition did.
What This Sauna Calculator Does Not Model
The MET method is a population average applied to a single number, and the honest limits are worth stating:
- Individual sweat rate varies widely.
The litres-per-hour figure is a typical value for the sauna type, not a measurement of you. Acclimatised regular users sweat sooner and more.
- Cardiovascular response is not modelled.
Heat raises heart rate, and a raised heart rate is not the same thing as a raised calorie burn. This tool does not convert one into the other.
- The fat equivalent is a conversion, not an outcome.
Dividing calories by 7,700 tells you what that energy is worth in fat, not that fat was the fuel or that it left your body.
- Nothing here is a health claim.
The documented effects of regular sauna bathing in the research literature are cardiovascular and thermoregulatory. Calorie burn is not the reason to use a sauna, and this page reports the arithmetic rather than recommending a protocol.
