Quick Answer

To convert a degree to a percentage, multiply the tangent of the angle by 100 for slope (30° = 57.74% grade, 45° = 100%) or divide the angle by 360 and multiply by 100 for a share of a circle (90° = 25%). The reverse uses arctangent: degrees = atan(percent ÷ 100), so an 8.33% ADA ramp is 4.76°.

Degree to Percentage Formula: Slope vs Circle Share

“Convert degrees to a percentage” means one of two very different things, and mixing them up is the single most common mistake. For slope, grade or gradient — driveways, ramps, roads, roofs — the percentage is the tangent of the angle. For a share of a circle — pie charts, data visualisation — it is a simple fraction of 360°:

Slope: % = tan(θ) × 100   ·   Circle: % = θ ÷ 360 × 100   ·   Reverse: θ = atan(% ÷ 100)
So 30° is a 57.74% grade but 8.33% of a circle — and a 100% grade is exactly 45°, because at 45° the rise equals the run.

Percent slope is rise divided by run, the number posted on US road hill signs and written into ramp specs. It is not a fraction of 90° — that misconception is covered below.

Why 45° = 100% (Not 50%): The Percent Slope Misconception

The intuitive guess — that percentage is the angle’s share of 90° — is wrong, and it is why hillside signs surprise people. Percent slope is rise ÷ run × 100 (the tangent). At 45° the rise equals the run, so the grade is 100% while the angle is only half of 90°. The relationship is not linear either: doubling an angle more than doubles its grade, and as the angle approaches 90° the percent runs off to infinity — a vertical cliff has no finite grade at all.

The circle meaning, by contrast, is linear — every 3.6° is exactly 1% of a full turn:

Real-World Grades: ADA Ramps, Road Signs & Roof Pitch

The percent form dominates the built world. Small-angle shortcut: below about 10°, slope percent ≈ degrees × 1.75 (because tan θ ≈ θ in radians). It breaks down fast after that — at 45° the true answer (100%) is 27% higher than the shortcut’s 78.7.

For slope, multiply the tangent of the angle by 100: 30° → tan(30°) × 100 = 57.74%. For a share of a circle, divide the angle by 360 and multiply by 100: 30° → 8.33% of a full turn.

As a slope, 45° is exactly 100% — the rise equals the run. As a share of a circle, 45° is 12.5% (45 ÷ 360).

45 degrees. A 100% grade means the road rises one unit for every unit it runs — it does not mean vertical, which is a common misreading of hill statistics.

Because percent slope is the tangent, which grows without bound: 80° is already 567%, and at 90° the run is zero, so the percentage is undefined (infinite) — a vertical face has no finite grade.

The ADA standards cap ramp running slope at 1:12, which is 8.33% or 4.76° (US Access Board). The recommended cross slope limit is 1:48 — about 2.08% or 1.19°.

Divide the wedge angle by 360 and multiply by 100: a 90° wedge is 25%, and every 3.6° equals exactly 1%. This linear rule applies only to circle shares — never to slopes.

Take the arctangent of the percent divided by 100: 10% → atan(0.10) = 5.71°. Below about 10% you can approximate with degrees ≈ percent × 0.573.
