The APUSH score calculator predicts your AP US History 1–5 score by converting section raw scores into a weighted composite out of 130: composite = (MCQ ÷ 55 × 52) + (SAQ ÷ 9 × 26) + (DBQ ÷ 7 × 32.5) + (LEQ ÷ 6 × 19.5). A composite near 97+ projects a 5, 80–96 a 4, 62–79 a 3, and 44–61 a 2 — thresholds are estimates that shift a few points each year.
APUSH Score Calculator Formula: the 130-Point Composite
The AP US History exam has four scored parts. Each part is marked on its own raw scale, then scaled to the share of the exam it is worth and added into a single composite out of 130. That composite is what maps to the 1–5 AP score.

The four shares come straight from the College Board’s published exam description: multiple choice 40%, short answer 20%, the document-based question 25% and the long essay 15%. The 130-point scale is the conventional weighted total those shares produce; the College Board publishes the percentages, not a composite table.
What One Raw Point Is Actually Worth
Because the four sections have wildly different raw scales, a point is not a point. One DBQ rubric point moves the composite 4.6429 places; one multiple-choice question moves it 0.9455. Convert the second into the first and the exchange rate is blunt.

A single DBQ rubric point is worth almost exactly five multiple-choice questions. Moving a DBQ from 4/7 to 6/7 is worth 9.29 composite points — more than getting nine extra multiple-choice questions right, and you only had to earn two rubric points to do it.
The ordering is worth memorising because it never changes: DBQ > LEQ > SAQ > MCQ. It is also not simply a restatement of which section is biggest. Ranked by total weight, multiple choice comes first at 52 points; ranked by what one more raw point buys you, it comes last. The DBQ is the sharper case still — it has more rubric points to spread its weight across than the LEQ (7 against 6) and each one is still worth more, because 25% divided seven ways beats 15% divided six ways.
The 78-Point Ceiling: Why Section I Alone Cannot Reach a 4
Answer all 55 multiple-choice questions correctly, take all 9 short-answer points, and write nothing at all. The composite is 78 out of 130 — an AP 3, and 2 points short of a 4.
Now invert it. Score zero on multiple choice and take everything else: 9/9 SAQ, 7/7 DBQ, 6/6 LEQ. The composite is also 78. The two mirror-image papers land on the same number because the two essays together (32.5 + 19.5 = 52) are worth exactly what all 55 multiple-choice questions are worth (52). The College Board states this directly, listing Section II as 40% of the score against Section I-A’s 40%.
The same arithmetic run the other way is more encouraging. Start from a perfect SAQ, DBQ and LEQ and add multiple choice back one question at a time: 21 correct answers out of 55 reaches a 5 (composite 97.85, where 20 correct gives 96.91 and falls short), and just 3 correct answers reach a 4. Coming from the other direction, a single rubric point anywhere in Section II turns that 78 into an AP 4 — even the cheaper LEQ point, which lifts 78 to 81.25.
How to Use the APUSH Score Calculator
- Pick a mode.
Leave it on By Section to enter raw scores from a practice exam. Switch to Quick (Composite) only if a teacher has already given you a weighted total out of 130 — that usually means they ran the paper through an official scoring worksheet.
- Enter your multiple-choice count.
Type the number of questions you got right, from 0 to 55, or drag the slider. There is no guessing penalty on this exam, so a blank answer and a wrong answer cost you the same thing: score every question you attempted, not just the ones you were sure about.
- Enter the three short answers separately.
Each SAQ is marked 0–3 and the calculator adds them to a total out of 9. The third box is labelled SAQ 3 or 4 because you answer only one of those two prompts — enter the score for whichever you chose, and leave it at that.
- Enter the DBQ and LEQ rubric points.
The DBQ runs 0–7 and the LEQ 0–6. Use the published rubric points, not a percentage: a 5/7 DBQ is five rubric points, not 71% of one.
- Read the result, then read the gap.
The panel shows your composite out of 130, that composite as a percentage, and the projected 1–5 score. Under it is the distance to the next band in composite points. Convert that distance using the exchange table above to decide where the points are cheapest to find.

Paper C in full: (33 ÷ 55 × 52) + (6 ÷ 9 × 26) + (6 ÷ 7 × 32.5) + (5 ÷ 6 × 19.5) = 31.20 + 17.33 + 27.86 + 16.25 = 92.64.
Compare it with B. Paper C got 17 fewer multiple-choice questions right and still finished 6.47 composite points ahead. Worse for B, the gap is not closeable on multiple choice: catching C would take 6.8 more correct answers and B has only 5 questions left unanswered correctly. Both papers project a 4, but B is 10.83 points from a 5 and C is 4.36 — and C can cover that with a single DBQ point.
Score Thresholds, and Why They Are Estimates
The calculator uses the bands below. Read the right-hand column before you trust any of them.

The single most useful number there is 47.7%. A 3 — the score most US colleges accept for credit — needs under half the available points. Students routinely assume a passing AP score means a passing-grade percentage; on this exam it does not.
The descriptors are the College Board’s own. The composite ranges are not: the College Board has never published the composite cut points for AP US History, and the reason to treat them cautiously is visible in its own score data.

Between 2023 and 2024 the share of students scoring a 4 went from 14.8% to 33.3% — it more than doubled in one year, a jump of 18.5 percentage points. The share scoring a 1 fell from 29.8% to 8.4%. The share scoring 3 or higher rose 24.6 percentage points, from 47.5% to 72.1%.
Those are not ordinary movements. Across the 22 published years from 2002 to 2023, the largest year-on-year change in the 4-rate was 3.3 percentage points; the 2023-to-2024 move is 5.6 times larger. The 2024 4-rate of 33.3% beats every one of those 22 years by at least 11.8 points, the 2024 1-rate of 8.4% is 6.1 points below the lowest previously recorded, and the 2024 pass rate of 72.1% clears the previous 22-year best — 58.8%, set in the disrupted 2020 administration — by 13.3 points.
A moving distribution is not by itself proof that the composite cut-offs moved — the College Board attributes recent gains to equating, that is, to students performing better on common items rather than to a redrawn line. But the two explanations are indistinguishable from outside, because the cut points are never published either way. Any composite-to-score table you find, including this one, is reverse-engineered from released score distributions, and one calibrated before 2024 is describing a different-looking exam. Treat a result within about 3 composite points of a boundary as genuinely uncertain.
What This Calculator Does Not Do
Four honest limits, because a score predictor that hides them is not useful.
It does not know this year’s cut-offs. Nobody outside the College Board does. The bands are estimates and they shift by a few points each administration, which is exactly what the distribution table above shows.
It does not mark your essays. It converts rubric points you supply. If you scored your own DBQ generously, the calculator will faithfully convert your generosity into a higher predicted score. Self-marked essays are the largest source of error in any AP score prediction, and the DBQ is the point where that error costs the most.
It does not model how students actually perform. Running every possible combination of raw scores — all 31,360 of them — gives 7.0% landing on a 5, 18.3% on a 4, 29.9% on a 3, 27.4% on a 2 and 17.4% on a 1, so 55.2% of the grid reaches a 3 or better. Real students scored 3 or better 74.0% of the time in 2026. The 18.8-point gap is the point: the grid describes the scoring surface, not the cohort, and it is not a prediction of your odds.
It assumes rubric points are independent. They are not, in practice. A thesis point and a complexity point tend to travel together, so mixed profiles that look arithmetically possible are rarer than the grid implies. That said, a perfect DBQ is not the price of entry to a 5: of the 2,204 raw-score combinations that reach a 5, 1,347 — 61.1% — do it without a 7/7 DBQ.
