How the DOTS formula works

DOTS = Total × 500 / (a₀ + a₁·BW + a₂·BW² + a₃·BW³ + a₄·BW⁴), with sex-specific coefficients. In the IPF's own March 2020 evaluation of five scoring formulas, DOTS finished second behind Goodlift and ahead of both Wilks versions. The IPF adopted Goodlift — IPF GL Points — from 1 May 2020; DOTS is used widely elsewhere.

How to Use the DOTS Calculator

The tool needs three things, and it recalculates the moment you change any of them — there is no submit button.

  1. Pick your sex. Male and female use completely different coefficients, so this is not a cosmetic setting. The same body weight and the same total produce a very different score depending on which one is selected.
  2. Enter your body weight. Use the dropdown next to the box to switch between kg and lb. Enter the weight you actually weighed in at, not your walking-around weight.
  3. Enter your total. That is your best squat plus best bench press plus best deadlift. The kg/lb dropdown for this field is separate, so you can enter a body weight in lb and a total in kg if that is how your numbers come.
  4. Read the score. The DOTS number appears on the right to two decimal places, with a strength category underneath it and a gauge showing where the score sits on the 0–600+ scale.

You can score a single lift the same way. Put one lift in the total field instead of the sum of three and you get a DOTS number for that lift alone. It is only comparable with other single-lift scores — never against a full three-lift total.

The DOTS Formula

DOTS divides your total by a fourth-order polynomial of your body weight, then scales the result by 500. Everything happens in kilograms — enter pounds and the calculator multiplies by 0.45359237 before the formula sees the number.

There is a shortcut hidden in the structure worth knowing. Because the 500 sits on top, the value of the polynomial is exactly the total that scores 500 DOTS at that body weight. Work out the denominator once and you have your 500-point target without touching the rest of the formula.

Worked Example: 83 kg Male, 650 kg Total

These are the values the calculator loads with, so you can follow along against the live result.

  1. Evaluate the polynomial at BW = 83 kg. Using the male coefficients: −307.75076 + (24.0900756 × 83) + (−0.1918759221 × 6,889) + (0.0007391293 × 571,787) + (−0.000001093 × 47,458,321) = 740.645.
  2. Scale the total. 650 × 500 = 325,000.
  3. Divide. 325,000 ÷ 740.645 = 438.81 DOTS.
  4. Read the category. 438.81 falls in the 400–499 band, so the tool tags it Advanced and puts the gauge needle just past the three-quarter mark.

Notice what step 1 gives you for free: 740.645 is also the total this lifter would need for a round 500 DOTS — 90 kg more than they are lifting now.

Pounds give a fractionally different answer. Entering 183 lb and 1,433 lb — the same lifter, rounded to whole pounds — returns 438.78 rather than 438.81, because 183 lb is 82.997 kg, not 83. The gap is rounding in your input, not in the formula. Enter kilograms when you have them.

DOTS Score Categories

The strength label under your score comes from these bands. They are a widely used reading of the scale rather than anything an international federation ratifies, so treat them as orientation, not as a grading system.

The third column is the point of the table. A category is not a fixed pile of weight — an 83 kg lifter needs 592.5 kg to reach Advanced, while a 120 kg lifter needs considerably more for the same label. That is precisely the distortion DOTS exists to remove.

DOTS vs Wilks, Wilks-2, IPF and Goodlift

This question has a documented answer, and it comes from the International Powerlifting Federation itself. Before choosing a replacement for its own scoring system, the IPF commissioned a statistical evaluation of five formulas, published in March 2020 and measured against results from every IPF world and European championship from 2011 onward. Each formula was scored on two criteria — how evenly it treats different weight classes (coefficient of variation) and how well it orders lifters of equivalent quality (rank correlation). Lower totals are better:

The report’s own conclusion is that Goodlift leads and “the DOTS formula ranks second by a large margin,” with both Wilks versions behind it and the IPF’s own 2018 formula last. The IPF acted on that: it adopted IPF GL Points, valid from 1 May 2020 across all IPF-sanctioned events.

The IPF does not use DOTS. Plenty of sources claim DOTS replaced Wilks at the IPF in 2020 — it did not. The IPF evaluated DOTS, ranked it second, and adopted Goodlift instead. DOTS is widely used elsewhere, which is why both scores are worth knowing, but if you are lifting at an IPF meet your official score is IPF GL Points.

Body Weight Moves Your Score More Than You Expect

DOTS has two inputs and lifters usually only train one of them. Holding a 650 kg total completely fixed and changing nothing but body weight:

The same three lifts are worth 509 DOTS at 66 kg and 356 at 140 kg. Near the middle of that range the trade rate is sharp: for our 83 kg lifter, dropping to 82 kg adds 3.02 DOTS, while adding 5 kg to the total adds 3.38. One kilogram of body weight is worth roughly four and a half kilograms on the platform — which is why meet-day weight management is a genuine part of the sport, and why a score always travels with the body weight it was set at.

Where the Formula Stops Working

DOTS is a curve fitted to competition data, so it is only trustworthy across the range that data covered.

Outside roughly 40–200 kg body weight the score is approximate. The calculator still returns a number there and shows a warning next to it. Below 40 kg especially, a polynomial fitted to adult competitors has no reason to behave sensibly, which is why DOTS is not a useful metric for children.

Three more limits worth holding on to. DOTS makes no distinction between raw and equipped lifting — a squat suit and knee wraps are worth a great deal of weight, and the formula cannot see them, so only compare like with like. It also draws no line between tested and untested federations. And because a single coefficient set covers every adult, it makes no age adjustment; masters lifters who want an age-graded comparison need a separate age factor on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

Around 300 puts you comfortably ahead of most people who lift recreationally, 400 is a strong competitive total, and 500 is the usual marker for national-level strength. Scores above 600 belong to a small number of lifters worldwide. These bands are a common reading of the scale rather than an official classification.

By the IPF’s own 2020 evaluation, yes. DOTS scored 44 overall against 57 for the original Wilks formula and 50 for Wilks-2, beating both on how evenly it treats weight classes and on how well it ranks equivalent lifters. Only Goodlift scored better, at 23.

No. This is the most common error written about DOTS. The IPF adopted IPF GL Points, based on the Goodlift formula, valid from 1 May 2020 for all IPF-sanctioned events. DOTS was one of the formulas the IPF compared before making that decision, and it finished second.

Because the relationship between body weight and expected total differs enough between the two that one curve cannot fit both. The size of the effect is easy to see: at 83 kg body weight with a 500 kg total, the male coefficients return 337.54 and the female coefficients return 462.72 for identical numbers.

Yes — enter that lift where the total goes. The formula only ever compares weight lifted against body weight, so it works on one lift as readily as three. Just keep the comparison honest: a single-lift DOTS is only meaningful against other single-lift scores.

No. One coefficient set covers everything, so an equipped total and a raw total are scored identically despite the equipment being worth a substantial amount of weight. Goodlift, by contrast, publishes separate coefficients for equipped and classic lifting.

Near 83 kg, about 3 DOTS per kilogram lost if your total holds — roughly what adding 4.5 kg to the total would give you. The effect flattens at heavier body weights: the same kilogram is worth far less at 140 kg than at 66 kg. It only helps if the total genuinely survives the cut.

Either — each field has its own unit dropdown, and pounds are converted at 0.45359237 kg per pound before the formula runs. Kilograms are marginally more precise simply because rounding to a whole pound is a smaller step than rounding to a whole kilogram; the same lifter entered as 183 lb / 1,433 lb scores 438.78 instead of 438.81.
